The Top Classic Horror Movies of All Time

Horror movies might be, well, scary, but they’re also a lot of fun. Some horror movies are so astoundingly suspenseful and creative that they can be watched again and again. You might have your own personal list of cult classic horror movies that you’re known to pop in and enjoy on a quiet evening, but there’s a chance that a few of the best titles are not yet in your collection. Check out this list of the top classic horror movies of all time to get all the thrills and chills on the big screen that you could ever desire.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Freddy Krueger is the stuff that nightmares are made of.  He’s been scaring grown-ups and adolescents since the early 1980s, and he’s not showing any sign of letting up. The ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ series is particularly frightening because the plot surrounds what happens when you lose control of what happens in your dreams. This classic horror movie has spawned a total of eight sequels to the original hit flick, making it apparent that scary movie fans really dig being haunted in their dreams and nightmares.

Poltergeist

This classic horror movie isn’t just scary because of its horrifyingly twisted script, there were a lot of strange and tragic events that occurred before this title was released to the public. Suffice to say that fans began to anticipate the film long before it was premiered. Some believe that the set of the film was cursed, resulting in lost lives and serious mishaps. The movie itself is about a family that has their lives turned upside down by mysterious spirits and ominous beings that reside in their home, and won’t leave no matter what. This cult horror classic was recently remade, and the new version might just actually be as scary as the original.

Night of the Living Dead

George A. Romero is universally considered to be the creator of the modern zombie. Although ‘Night of the Living Dead’ was meant to be a social commentary on politics and race relations, the methods used to deliver the message were nothing short of horrifying. The idea of flesh eating zombies, slowly moving as they are, taking over the world, was a concept not encountered prior to Romero’s debut smash horror hit. An entire subgenre of horror movies devoted to zombies has cropped up, making this title a scary film that you can’t afford to miss.

Evil Dead

‘Evil Dead,’ in a word, is just plain shocking. While most horror movies make use of gore liberally, this cult classic takes things to an entirely different level. Keeping with the ‘evil,’ theme, every scene in this movie is enough overwhelming to both the senses as well as common sensibilities. This is yet another cult classic horror movie that has been remade in recent years, much to the delight of dedicated fans.

In short, all horror is not made equal. Some fans are going to enjoy slasher films just a bit more than they take an interest in tales of possession. Other horror aficionados are all about the paranormal. Each title on this list of horror classics is sure to tickle your fancy in one way or another, just be sure to keep the lights on while you watch.
