Stress is simply a part of life, and while we cannot eliminate it completely, there are a number of things we can do to minimise its effects on our productivity and happiness & relieve stress. Following on from my Improve Your Relationship With Yourself TODAY you’ll find many different strategies that you can employ, but some of them may be more effective than others depending on the level and type of stress you are experiencing. If you think your stress levels may be interfering with your mood, or your ability to concentrate, read on for four ways to alleviate stress with relative ease.
Quality of Sleep
Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the easiest ways that you can lower your stress levels. Feeling well-rested and refreshed is a great way to ensure that you don’t carry residual stress around with you. Many different factors, including the style and quality of your mattress, can contribute to your sleep pattern. If you think your mattress may be preventing you from sleeping properly, talk to specialists such as Sleepy’s so that they can help you choose a new one that benefits your quality of sleep.
Learning to meditate may sound a little bit silly, but it can actually do wonders for your stress levels and your mental health. Meditation makes you more aware of the way you are breathing, and the depth at which you are breathing. It allows you to focus on the present, instead of whatever is bothering you at the time. You can even do this at work if you are having a particularly tough day – taking that little bit of time out will do wonders for your stress levels.
Having a hobby or two is a good way to relieve stress. It doesn’t matter what kind of hobby you have, just as long as it takes your mind off whatever you may be stressed about and you enjoy it. If you are a social butterfly, find an activity or two that allows you to socialise with others – join a book club, for instance. If you prefer to be alone, find something you can do in the comfort of your own home – this can be anything from learning to play a musical instrument to taking reading a book or two.
Exercise releases endorphins, which help to relieve stress. The word usually conjures images of the gym, but you don’t have to hit the gym to get a good dose of exercise. Just go for a light jog or a walk around your neighbourhood every day – it will do you a world of good!
Regularly experiencing too much stress can often cause more serious health issues down the track, so you need to be able to manage your stress levels in a way that befits your personality and lifestyle. Some of these tips are quite basic, but you may be surprised at how effective they can be. Good luck!
