Baby Number Two or Contraception?!

Labour and Delivery Hospital Room

I’m pretty sure that you know contraception is free for most of the UK, and there are 13 methods for females to choose from. Yep 13  … I didn’t actually know that until after I had Hayden.

  • caps
  • combined pill
  • condoms (female)
  • contraceptive implant
  • contraceptive injection
  • contraceptive patch
  • diaphragms
  • intrauterine device (IUD)
  • intrauterine system (IUS)
  • natural family planning
  • progestogen-only pill
  • vaginal ring

There is also a permanent method of contraception

  • female sterilisation
Contraceptive methods allow you to choose when and whether you want to have a baby (If you didn’t know already) I knew for a fact that we wanted to have another baby but we have chosen not to have another little one for another couple of years – I get broody from time to time but I definitely want to enjoy Hayden as a baby & toddler and we would love him to understand whats going on when we choose to have another baby.

After I gave birth to Hayden I had no Idea what contraception method I wanted to choose, with having 13 methods to choose from I opted for the IUD (sometimes called a coil).
I have to say my experience with this was absolutely horrid. The pain I received after it was put in was just like being in labour. I read that most people experience cramping pain after it’s put in but it tends to fade over time. I still get the pain but not always & not as strong any more. I do contemplate having it removed but I think now its bearable.

I also understand contraception is not for everyone after reading an article at http://sclcnational.org
What contraception did you choose if any after giving birth?

After Nolan I knew I wanted another baby close in age so we wer just going to take things as it happened… But I exclusively breastfed Nolan and I know that it’s not a form on contraception but it prevented me from getting pregnant even though I wasn’t trying to not get pregnant… After baby number 2 I probably will go on the pill again… Not a fan of the coil so that’s defo not a choice for me…

    • I wish you all the luck in the world for baby number two sugar. I take it you are good at remembering to take it everyday. I’m so rubbish at these kind of things x

  2. Hey,
we just had baby no.2 and i’ve always been on the pill but after no.2 i don’t want any kind of hormonal contraception as i feel so much happier without it (it makes me moody and low sex drive) and i can’t stand the thought of the coil so we’ve opted for condoms after i’ve tried different pills etc. over the years, we just have to be careful and i feel so much better for it! No religious views on it just a personal choice xx

    • I’m so with you on that one Georgina, I didn’t want to opt for anything with chemicals but I’m so rubbish as taking things daily. It’s a hard choice when there are so many to choose from but you don’t know what right for you. Maybe condoms are the best way to go x

  3. Same as Terci here. Breastfeeding seems to be working but after baby 2 will go on the pill. Not a fan of anything else lol xx

  4. Wow, that is a lot of choices to choose from, lol!

  6. That’s great that you’re offered so many options and aren’t forced into something that doesn’t work for you and your situation.

  7. A lot of friends have had trouble with the coil – I would get the pain checked out hun. XOXO
